The Oracle

While we wondered at these things, the doors, suddenly impelled, opened with a tremedous creaking, and a greater light unexpectedly strikes our eyes. Before the altars stands the priest, shining in snowy-white vestment, and the people strive to rush together. Behold! the god suddenly enters into the seer. Deep murmurs roll around in the resounding grove, after branches crash together, and a voice luder than known before bursts into the air:

"You are heading for Latium, and you are preparing to pursue the Romans in war, Carthaginians. I see difficult beginnings, and I see savage Mars now climbing into (his) chariot, and his raging horses breathing black (dark) flames onto the Italian shore, and the reins flowing with much blood. Nor will the Roman race ever put aside anxiety, as long as Hannibal shall snatch the uipper air on the earth."

Such prophesies did Bostar cary to joyous men (hearers), and filled the men with a love for imminent battle.

Two Ancient Views on Vegentarinism

Both Pythagoras and Sextius abstained from (eating) animals. The reason was diferent for each one, but for each, magnificent. Sextius used to believe that there was enough (of) food for a man besides blood (animals), and theat the custom of cruelty was formed when butchery (the killing of animals) was extended into pleasure. Moreover, he used to argue that a varied (omnivorous) diet was contrary to good health and foreign to our bodies. But Pythagoras said that there was a relationship of all things among all things and that there was an interchange of sould passing into some forms, then others. If you believe him (Pythagoras), no sould perishes, nor even ceases to function except in the short time while it is being pured into another body. For we do not know through what cycles of times, or when, after very many "homes" have been wandered through,it might return to a human beig. I nthe meantime this causes fear of crime and parricide for human beings, since they might, unknowing, encounter the soul of a parent (ancestor) and do violence to (it) with knife or bite, if a kindred spirit be temporarily residing in that (piece of meat).
