Ambulator is really Jeremy M. Walker.
I was born and raised in the country near Redkey, Indiana, which is located
in Jay County. Jay County is a rural county in East Central Indiana; it
borders Ohio. I am the oldest of three boys, Jeremy, Jason, and Joel.
Our mother is Janet. We own an 80 acre farm, which is usually planted
in wheat, corn, and soybeans. My brothers and I have been raising sheep
to show for 4-H for the last 20 years or more. We occasionally also raise
some cattle and hogs for meat. This is my tenth year of teaching Latin
at Crown Point High School in Crown Point, Indiana (Northwest Indiana).
Jason, the middle brother, is an electrical engineer working for Cinergy and
is based out of Terre Haute. Currently he is working as the construction electrical
engineer for a rebuilding project at the plant in Cayuga. Jason spends quality
time with his former step-children, Shawn and Cheridan. Joel is my "baby"
brother and is now working with my stepfather Dave at his heating and cooling
business. Joel has two babies, Colton and Taylor. Colton looks just like his
daddy, but Taylor looks like her mommy, Lisa. I am also the godfather of Nathaniel
Benson Gunter, the son of one of my fraternity brothers and his lovely wife,
a CP native and graduate of that school in Greencastle (Depauw). Nathaniel now
has a younger brother (Nick) and two younger sisters (Elizabeth and Jocelyn).
I graduated from Jay County High School in 1988. While at JCHS, I was active in the marching band, the speech and debate team, the academic teams, the Latin Club (JCL), and the T.V. production studio.
I attended Wabash College from 1988 to 1992, where I was active in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity [Grand Scribe-Fall 1989; Grand Master of Ceremonies-Fall 1991], the Senior Classical League, the Wabash College Band, Phi Sigma Iota (a foreign language honorary), and Eta Sigma Phi (a classics honorary) [National Treasurer 1990-1991].
I completed a double major in Latin and mathematics at Wabash and graduated cum laude in May of 1992. While at Wabash I studied under Joe Day, Leslie Day, John Fischer, Ariel Loftus, and David Kubiak, I also spent the fall semester of my junior year (1990) studying at the Centro (Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies) in Rome. Jim Russell was the director of the program for the 1990-1991 year.
After Wabash, I moved on to Indiana University, where I completed a Masters Degree in Latin and completed certification requirements to teach Latin and math in Indiana. While at IU I studied under James Franklin, Kevin Glowacki, James Halporn, Eleanor Leach, Betty Rose Nagle, and Ted Ramage. At IU, I was also inducted into Pi Lambda Theta (an education honorary).

At Crown Point I sponsor the CPHS Latin Club, a chapter of the Indiana Junior Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. I have sponsored thirteen state officers since I have started teaching: three presidents, three recording secretaries, three parliamentarians, one treasurer, one editor, and two webmasters. My current officer is Phil Katz (Webmaster). We are also able to boast of a national officer this year (Crown Point's second and my first). Andy Schrum is the President of the National Junior Classical League. Additionally, I am now serving on the National Committee as the Membership and Public Relations Chair.
I was very pleased to receive the Latin Teacher of the Year award from the Indiana Classical Conference in 2003. I was additionally suprised in 2004 to receive the Crystal Apple from the Crown Point Education Association and the regional award, the Torch of Knowledge, presented by the Indiana State Teachers Association.
I have the opportunity of teaching alongside one of my former students, Ryan Collier (CPHS '96). We hired Mr. Collier as a math teacher, but I quickly lured him away to take two sections of Latin. He is currently teaching the two Latin II sections; in return, I teach two Geometry sections. He has been teaching Latin with me since the 2001-2002 school year.
Every year seems to be a good year for the CPHS Latin Club. If you would like to see our most recent results from the IJCL state convention, National Latin Exam, National Mythology Exam, Medusa Mythology Exam, or the NJCL convention, please go to the club webpage and click on the appropriate link.
I was the advisor of the CPHS chapter of the National Honor Society from the fall of 1996 until the spring of 1999, then again temporarily in the spring of 2000.
In the summer of 1998 I became a core faculty member of the VRoma Project, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and attended a workshop for the project July 14-August 1. At this workshop I started four projects. I made this home page and placed many of my slides on-line as part of the VRoma collection. I constructed the Forum of Augustus in the VRoma MOO. I also revised and expanded an Augustan Monument Project that I do with my fourth year students using HyperCard and now Power Point as well.
In the fall of 1998 I became one of the first two CPHS teachers to provide distance education courses from our school. I have previously taught a section of my first year Latin course and a section of my second year Latin course to students at Hanover Central HS and CPHS via a two-way audio and video distance learning network (Vision Athena). Unfortunately, we no longer participate in this program.
