Indiana Junior Classical League (Latin Club) State Convention 2001 Results

26 members of the Crown Point Latin Club attended state convention at Indiana University in Bloomington on April 20-21, 2001. Robby Schrum, who completed his term as IJCL President, received the Elizabeth Love Scholarship and was also awarded a scholarship by the Indiana Classical Conference, the state professional organization for Latin teachers. He also earned an individual academic trophy based on his total placings on the ten exams. This is Robby's fourth such award in as many years.

The CPHS Novice Certamen team of Ryan Armstrong, Luke Bapple, Natalie Holtzinger, and Ann Walter returned home as state champions. This marks our second year in a row with Novice Champions. The CPHS Upper Certamen team of Seth Bostian, Kelly Sankowski, Robby Schrum, and Chip Walter also returned home as state champions. This marks our second year in a row with Upper Champions.

The CPHS Latin Club placed fifth in the scrapbook competition; the CPHS scrapbook was constructed by Sarah Carr and Krystina Trimble. The CP delegation also placed second in the Convention Delegate Spirit competition and ninth in the Membership contest showing a modest 7% growth.

We placed second in the Publicity contest with over 16,000 points. We increased 6,000 points last year and another 6,000 points this year, thanks in parts to local media coverage. We are now only 3,000 points behind the first place school. An additional 3,000 points seems like a reasonable goal for next year.

The CPHS Latin Club also won the Helen Wampler Spirit award again this year. This award is based upon our club's year round activities. This traveling trophy bears the Crown Point HS name as its first recipient in 1980. The last available bar on this plaque will now also bear the Crown Point name. The CPHS Latin Club also earned the Sweepstakes award based on overall achievement in all of the competitions, making us the 2000-2001 State Champions. In fact, our total placings gave us 1,739 points. The second place school had 612 points so we were quite proud of our accomplishments.

Karen Schrum, mother of Robby Schrum and CPJCL chaperone, was honored by the state group with the Outstanding Service Award. This award was previously awarded to CPHS chaperone, Mrs. Nancy Halfman, in 1996. Finally, Katie Braggs was elected Recording Secretary of the Indiana Junior Classical League for the year 2001-2002. Additionally, Mr. Walker was elected by IJCL sponsors as the IJCL Co-chair for the years 2001-2006. Accordingly, both Katie and Mr. Walker will serve on the IJCL Executive Board which meets four times a year and coordinates over six state and national student activities.
