24 members of the Crown Point Latin Club attended state convention at Purdue University in West Lafayette on April 7-8, 2000. Stacy Jovanoski, who completed her term as IJCL Parliamentarian, received the Augusta Lavengood Scholarship for future Latin teachers. Lauren Griffith and Robby Schrum earned individual academic trophies based on their total placings on the ten exams. This is Lauren's second and Robby's third such award. The CPHS Scrapbook, put together by Meagan Plants, placed 5th. The CP delegation placed 3rd in the delegate spirit contest. The club also received 3rd in the Publicity contest with over 10,000 points, an increase of 6,000 points over last year's total. [See Below.]
We are proud to announce that our Novice division Certamen team, consisting of Sarah Carr, Nick Hoffman, Daya Pillai, and Amy Rieser, and the Upper division Certamen team, consisting of Lauren Griffith, Stacy Jovanoski, Janet Monstwillo, and Robby Schrum, each returned home as State Champions.
We were very pleased to receive the Helen Wampler Spirit award. This award is based upon our club's year round activities. The traveling trophy returns to Crown Point for the first time since it was first awarded to anyone back in 1980.
The CPHS Latin Club also earned the Sweepstakes award based on overall achievement in all of the competitions, making us the 1999-2000 State Champions.
Our final bit of excitement came with the election of Robby Schrum as President of the Indiana Junior Classical League for the year 2000-2001. As IJCL President, Robby will be responsible for chairing all board meetings, leading the IJCL delegation to the National Convention in Oklahoma in August, and planning and hosting the IJCL President's Day at CPHS in the fall..
The last president from Crown Point was Matt Ames, who was president in 1996-1997. Matt was also present at the convention and was reelected as president of the Indiana Senior Classical League, the college level of our state/national organization.
Nota Bene:
1) Everyone who went with us placed in the top ten in some area of competition.
