Five Crown Point Latin students traveled with their sponsor and 48 other members of the Indiana Junior Classical League down to Florida State University in Tallahassee for the 1999 National Junior Classical League Convention. The convention ran from Sunday, August 1 to Friday, August 6. At this convention, students competed in academic tests, academic quiz bowl competitions (Certamen), creative art contests (sight Latin reading , Latin oratory, dramatic interpretations, etc.), athletic events (Olympika), and graphic art competitions (models, drawings in various media, mosaics, posters, maps, handicrafts, etc.). Attending from Crown Point were Lauren Griffith, Chris Humbert, Stacy Jovanoski, Janet Monstwillo, and Robby Schrum. Their teacher and sponsor is Mr. Jeremy Walker.
The Crown Point Latin Club had a successful convention receiving 17th in the Publicity competition and 9th in the Scrapbook competition for small chapters. The CPHS scrapbook was created under the direction of second year students Meagan Plants and Dala Duffala.
Individual results were also impressive with all five students receiving at least one placing of 20th or higher on an academic test. Highlights included third year student Lauren Griffith placing seventh in Dramatic Interpretation--Prose--Girls, and placing seventh in Sight Latin Reading--Advanced Prose. Second year student Robby Schrum was a member of the second place Indiana boys relay team. He also placed eighth on the Latin Derivatives exam, 7th on the Reading Comprehension exam, and 5th on the Ancient Geography exam. Robby also brought home first place honors in the Sight Latin Reading--second year competition. This placing and his participation in other creative arts competitions earned him a tenth place award for overall achievement in the area of creative arts.
Individual results follow for all five students.
