Legend says that King Numa erected the Regia, or king's house, where he spent the greater part of his time, performing divine sevice, instructing the priests, or conversing with them on sacred subjects. It became the official headquarters of the Pontifex Maximus and the place of assembly of the sacred colleges. Here were kept the archives of the pontiffs, the formulas of all kinds of prayers, vows, sacrifices, etc., the state calendar of sacred days, the Annales- the record of events of each year for public reference- and the laws relating to marriage, death, wills, etc. Here, too, were the ancilia, the shields of Mars, which had fallen from Heaven and were carried by the Salii, the dancing priests of Mars.
