cleaning of cloth

Wool cloths were cleaned and bleached by treading in vats filled with a solution composed of water, stale urine, and fuller's earth. This was probably not a very pleasant task, and it is significant that this wall painting shows children as well as adults performing it. After this operation the cloths were washed in large vats and hung to dry.

drying and carding cloth

White cloths were spread over large wire frames, like the one depicted above, under which sulfur was burned to bleach the cloth. After cleaning and bleaching, the wool cloths were carded and brushed to raise the nap. Finally, the cloths were pressed and folded.
