"For all the earth
is the tomb of famous men" - Thucydides, from History
of the Peloponnesian Wars
Thucydides,
an Athenian aristocrat and historian, wrote his history of the
Peloponnesian Wars at the time that the war took place. As an
exile, he interviewed and investigated from afar, but also added
his own criticisms to the text. This quotation is drawn from
Pericles' Funeral
Oration, which Thucydides includes to remark upon the greatness
of his fellow countrymen. This saying is inscribed upon the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier in Athens, where it continues to serve
as a patriotic reminder to Greece of its heritage.
