"Sara" from Desire (1976)

Quote:

(1) Sara, Sara, / Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress. / Sara, Sara, / You must forgive me my unworthiness.

(2) Sara, Sara, / Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow. / Sara, Sara, / Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

Comments:

(1) The Sphinx, usually depicted as a winged lion with a woman's head, terrorized the Greek city of Thebes. Oedipus defeated her by solving her infamous riddle (pictured above on the left).

(2) A nymph is a generic Greek nature deity. On the right is Bernini's famous sculpture of the metamorphosis of the river nymph Daphne.
