Simon, one of the original disciples of Jesus, was called Peter ("rock") because he was one of the main "rocks" upon which the early Christian church was built. Persecuted by authorities in Rome during the reign of the Emperor Nero, legend has it that Peter requested to be crucified upside-down so as not to be equated with Jesus.
