Rome had an enormous slave population -- fully one-third of the total population in the city of Rome itself. Unlike slavery in America, however, Roman slavery was not tied to any specific racial or cultural identity; a Roman slave might have been a poor white Italian, a blonde German, a well-educated Greek, or a dark-skinned Ethiopian.
