I said for the Pope of Eruke / I was employed. / They let me go right away. / They were very paranoid. |

Dylanologists love to debate this one. Is the Pope of Eruke a real person or simply nonsensical language in a song full of abstract words and images? (Or is it the Pope of a rook? Or the Pope of Uruk?) At any rate, Dylan did play for a real Pope -- John Paul II -- at a concert in Bologna, Italy in 1997, performing "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," and "Forever Young." |
