The 36 students who have won five gold medals will be sent special book awards.
NLE Scholarships |
Applications for the $1,000 scholarships will be mailed to gold medal winners in Latin III-IV Prose, III-IV Poetry, or Latin V-VI who are high school seniors. Those who apply must agree to take at least one year of Latin or classical Greek in college. A classics in translation course does not fulfill this requirement.
There were 739 seniors who won gold medals on the Latin Ill-IV Prose, III-IV Poetry, or the Latin V- VI Exam. These students are eligible for one of the twenty $1000 scholarships. An anonymous donor has again given the NLE $1000 for one additional scholarship in 2001. These awards and the awards for the National Greek Exam were announced by NLE Scholarship Chair Doris Kays at the ACL Institute at Trinity University in June. The National Latin Exam Scholarship Committee, formed in 1983, consists of Doris Kays, Chair, and members Conrad Barrett, Sara Gibson, June LeRay, Deborah Mason, and John W. Zarker. The scholarship recipients from 2000, 1999, and 1998, are eligible for an additional $1000 if they continue their study of Latin and/or Greek. In 2000, the National Latin Exam awarded $51,000 in scholarships.
